It’s important for people who are supporting someone with a mental health issue to also look after themselves, physically and emotionally. This resource from Beyond Blue offers practical tips on how to care for yourself:
Accept how you feel: You may experience a range of emotions. And they’re all normal.
Recognise supporting someone else may affect your relationships: It can affect your relationship with that person, as well as with others (e.g. partners, children, parents).
Look after yourself: Don’t be too hard on yourself.
Find the right support for you: It might be your GP, a counsellor, a support group or an informal support network.
Work out what will work for you: Not every option works for everyone, so choose what’s best for you.
