About this resource

Career shocks and unanticipated events (such as the death of a loved one, divorce or separation, work or personal crises, or disaster events) can cause significant distress. They can trigger individuals to review their career and seek a new path by changing employment or undertaking further education. They can lead to disengagement within the workplace, a move to a different office or location, or changes in routines and responsibilities (e.g. becoming a carer).

The guide outlines ways organisations can support people experiencing crises and career shocks, and things these workers can do to support themselves.

This guide explores 2 case studies:

  • How Westpac supported workers and customers experiencing floods in Queensland and New South Wales
  • How Viva Energy supported a worker experiencing domestic violence.

Both case studies include tips and advice for others.
