About this resource

This 2012 report by Safe Work Australia presents evidence about Australian work conditions and how they affect workplace health and productivity. Key results include the following:

  • Depression costs Australian employers approximately $8 billion each year as a result of sickness absence and presenteeism, with job strain and bullying accounting for $693 million.
  • Nationally, the 3 industries with the highest psychosocial risks are Transport and storage; Accommodation, cafes and restaurants; and Health and community services. Results vary for particular states and territories.
  • Young workers (25–34 years) have the poorest psychological health, likely reflecting factors such as competing work and family demands, entering the workforce following study, and working long hours to advance in their careers.
  • Urban workers report higher psychological demands than rural workers.

The research also found levels of bullying at 6.8%, which are substantially higher than international rates.
