About this resource

Becoming a parent is one of the most significant transitions a person will go through in their lifetime, including the fundamental transition from ‘working person’ to ‘working parent’. It involves a mental and emotional shift, and can also involve physical changes. It’s natural to focus on the mother, but all parents – fathers, non-birth partners and foster parents – need support.

Many working parents also find themselves looking after their elderly parents.

This guide outlines ways organisations can support people becoming parents or carers, and things these workers can do to support themselves.

The case study outlines SEEK’s comprehensive program to create an inclusive culture and support people through their parental leave journey. It includes tips and advice for others.
