About this resource

This is Queensland’s approved Code of Practice for managing work health and safety. It provides practical guidance for employers on how to meet the work health and safety standards set out in the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act) and the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011. It applies to all workplaces covered by the WHS Act and Regulations.

It explains the four-step process for managing risks:

  1. Identify risks
  2. Assess risks
  3. Control risks
  4. Review control measures.

The hierarchy of controls can help you decide how to eliminate and reduce risks in your workplace. Always choose controls from the highest level you can that are suitable for your business.
